Change is something we must all embrace on a daily basis. Unfortunately, that chocolate yoghurt I ate yesterday isn’t in the fridge today. In the internet-marketing world, changes are happening particularly fast. Strategies and techniques that used to be effective are becoming obsolete. You only need to look at a few Clickbank sales pages to appreciate how quickly they’re becoming dated.
As the internet changes, so will the most effective ways to market using the internet. Michel Fortin discusses this in “The Death Of The Salesletter”. At first, sales pages mimicked direct-mail sales letters — complete with the “Dear Friend” and the “P.P.P.P.S” — but with the spread of broadband, having pages and pages of words is losing its power. Prospects can now absorb the same information through audio and video.
Perhaps the internet’s development will stabilise, or maybe there will be no end to the internet’s continual rapid change. But either way, if you want to make a living from the internet for many years to come, you must stay on the cutting edge of these changes.
It may be that if you get left behind you won’t be able to catch up. Information products used to be the creation of one-man bands, but now they’re also created by small companies. The best will probably continue to grow, creating large companies. While the barriers to entry are extremely low right now, this may change. If having a large company is an advantage and they can lock down their piece of the pie, then starting afresh ten years from now will be considerably more difficulty than it is now.
To be perfectly honest, I doubt that will actually happen, but I do think there is a lesson here. Of those who actually get their cash cow, many stick to that winning formula and proceed to beat it to death. Those who want a secure income for many years to come must anticipate changes and adapt to meet them.
Of course, you have to actually start earning money before these sorts of changes become a problem…
