Overlooking Product Creation

“Deliver what you’d want to buy if the circumstances were reversed”

Charlie Munger

When I first discovered internet marketing, I completely overlooked the need for a ball-busting product. It should come as no surprise that your average internet-marketing teacher will teach internet marketing exclusively. Product creation is not on the syllabus. However, many people, including myself, who read their emails and blog posts come to believe the product is secondary due to its absence.

It’s an easy mistake to make. An internet-marketing teacher’s value is their internet-marketing expertise. Your value doesn’t necessarily have to be in internet marketing.

For many people, internet marketing is synonymous with tricking fools into handing over their wallets; I thought this when I started learning the subject, the result being that I promoted shoddy Clickbank products and made no sales. Perhaps I was foolish, but I completely overlooked the desires of my prospects. I was so focused on improving my skills as a marketer that I failed to see the lack of value I was providing.

My view has completely changed. Sure, I’m still a rookie marketer, but I now appreciate that if I ever want to be successful I must provide value. As long as you have value to provide, you have an income. If you have value, you can produce products, hold seminars, or whatever, because people will always cough up cash to get value.

While being an able copywriter will always help when selling a product, I think that if you have a great product then it will sell itself. There will be no reason to lie or embellish what your product does because it will already be the dog’s bollocks. And your customers will not only be satisfied with your product: they will be hungry for more. You’ll glance upwards, finger-drum your chin, and consider the price point of your upsell with glee.

Without marketing, even the greatest product will not sell, but that doesn’t mean you should neglect your product’s quality. Once you have a product of outstanding quality, then you can consider how to market it most effectively.
